A well-fitting jacket is an investment — especially when it offers both comfort and confidence. To keep that perfect fit, color, and performance, proper care is essential. This is particularly true for plus-size jackets, which are often designed with extra room for movement and support. Here’s a guide to washing and drying your jacket the right way, so it keeps its shape and function season after season.

Always Read the Care Label First

It may sound obvious, but many people skip this step. The care label is your best guide to preserving your jacket’s fit. It tells you the right temperature, whether it can go in the dryer, and any special care instructions for the fabric.

  • Softshell and technical jackets usually need a gentle wash in cold water and no fabric softener, as it can damage the water-repellent coating.
  • Down jackets should be washed with a down-specific detergent and dried thoroughly with clean tennis balls in the dryer to maintain loft.
  • Wool or wool-blend jackets should be washed on a wool cycle or dry-cleaned to prevent shrinking and distortion.

When in doubt, choose the gentlest method — it will extend your jacket’s life.

Prep Your Jacket Before Washing

Before tossing your jacket in the washer, take a few simple steps that make a big difference:

  1. Zip up zippers, close buttons, and fasten Velcro. This protects both the jacket and your washing machine.
  2. Empty all pockets. Small items can scratch the fabric or damage the lining.
  3. Turn the jacket inside out. This reduces wear on the outer surface and helps preserve color.
  4. Use a mild detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, as they can break down coatings and membranes.

If your jacket has a removable hood or faux-fur trim, take it off before washing. It makes the process more effective and gentle.

Wash with Care

Plus-size jackets take up more space in the washer, which can affect how well they clean. Make sure there’s enough room in the drum for water and detergent to circulate freely. Overloading can lead to uneven washing and creasing.

Choose a gentle cycle with a low spin speed — ideally under 800 RPM. This helps prevent the fabric from stretching or losing shape. Use cold or lukewarm water unless the care label says otherwise.

After washing, hang the jacket on a wide hanger so it dries in its natural shape. Avoid wringing or twisting it — that can distort seams and padding.

Drying – The Critical Step

Drying is often where fit is lost, so choose the right method for your jacket’s material.

  • Air drying is the safest option. Hang the jacket on a sturdy hanger in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.
  • Tumble drying can be used for down or synthetic-filled jackets, but only on low heat. Add a few clean tennis balls to the dryer — they help redistribute the filling and prevent clumping.
  • Wool jackets should always be laid flat on a towel to dry, so they don’t lose their shape.

Avoid hanging heavy, wet jackets on thin hangers — they can stretch the shoulders. Use a wide, supportive hanger instead.

Restore Water Repellency

After several washes, many jackets lose their water-resistant finish. You can easily restore it with a water-repellent spray or a wash-in treatment. Apply the product when the jacket is clean and dry, and follow the instructions carefully. This helps protect the fabric from moisture and dirt — and makes future cleaning easier.

Store with Care

When your jacket isn’t in use, hang it freely in a dry, ventilated closet. Avoid cramming it between other garments, as that can distort the shoulders. For long-term storage, especially for winter coats, use a breathable garment bag that keeps out dust while allowing air circulation.

A Jacket That Keeps Its Shape – Season After Season

With the right care, a plus-size jacket can maintain its fit, comfort, and appearance for years. It’s not about washing often — it’s about washing smart. Gentle cleaning, proper drying, and thoughtful storage make all the difference, ensuring your jacket continues to feel tailor-made every time you put it on.
