Maternity underwear is designed to provide comfort, support, and flexibility during a time when your body is constantly changing. These garments are often made from soft, stretchy fabrics that adapt to your growing belly and shifting shape—sometimes even into the postpartum period. But the same materials that make them so comfortable also require a bit of extra care when it comes to washing. Here’s a guide to help you wash your maternity underwear gently so it keeps its shape, color, and comfort for as long as possible.

Know Your Fabrics – and Read the Care Label

Maternity underwear comes in many materials: cotton, bamboo, microfiber, and spandex blends are among the most common. Each fabric type has its own washing and drying needs.

  • Cotton can usually handle warmer water but may shrink if washed too hot.
  • Bamboo and microfiber are more delicate and should be washed in cooler water to maintain softness.
  • Spandex (elastane) provides stretch but can lose elasticity if exposed to high heat.

Always check the care label before tossing your underwear in the washer. It’s the best way to ensure your garments stay in good shape and continue to provide the support you need.

Wash in Cool or Warm Water

It can be tempting to use hot water to make sure everything feels extra clean, but that’s rarely necessary. Most modern detergents work effectively in cool or warm water (around 85–105°F). Washing at lower temperatures helps protect the fibers and colors—and it’s also more energy-efficient.

If your washing machine has a delicate or gentle cycle, use it. These settings reduce agitation and spin speed, minimizing wear and tear on the fabric.

Use Mild Detergent – and Skip the Fabric Softener

A mild, fragrance-free detergent is the best choice, especially since skin can be more sensitive during pregnancy. Avoid fabric softeners, which can coat the fabric and reduce breathability and stretch.

If you want to keep your underwear soft, try adding a small amount of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. It helps remove detergent residue and keeps fabrics supple without damaging the fibers.

Use a Mesh Laundry Bag

Delicate items like maternity bras and panties with lace or elastic details benefit from being washed in a mesh laundry bag. It prevents them from getting tangled with other clothes or caught on zippers. This small step can significantly extend the life of your underwear—especially nursing bras or tops with clips and fasteners.

Air-Dry Instead of Using the Dryer

While the dryer is convenient, it’s tough on elastic fabrics. Heat can cause spandex to lose its stretch and make the material feel stiff. Instead, hang your underwear to dry on a rack or lay it flat on a clean towel. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade colors.

If you must use a dryer, choose a low-heat and delicate setting—but keep in mind that air-drying is always gentler and helps your garments last longer.

Store It Properly

Once dry, store your maternity underwear in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Fold bras and tops carefully so the cups keep their shape, and avoid cramming too many items into one drawer. It’s also a good idea to rotate between several sets so you’re not wearing and washing the same pieces every day. This gives the fabric and elastic time to “rest” between uses.

Gentle Care Means Longer Life – and Lasting Comfort

Maternity underwear is an investment in your comfort during a special time. With a little extra attention to washing and care, you can extend its lifespan and keep it feeling soft, supportive, and comfortable. It’s not about making laundry more complicated—it’s about giving your clothes the best chance to stay like new, wash after wash.
